NEEDED FOR
POTENTIAL BREEDING PROSPECTS:
Since you clicked on this
page, you are either wondering what this is about or interested in
becoming a foster parent. Let me try to answer some of
your questions you might have.
It would be preferred if you live in
Prince Edward Island.
A breeder
is always trying to better the breed. To strive for "that perfect
dog".
First off, I breed for
health and great temperament. Out of my litters, there may be one I
would like to keep in my breeding program. Please understand, I
grade the puppies at 8 weeks, 12 weeks or 16 weeks and so on. But to
be fair to the dog, he or she needs the love and attention from a
home environment. The "one on one" quality time. Sometimes I also
have older dogs available for this program, for those who do not
want to raise a puppy.
When I decide there is a
dog I would like to keep in the breeding program, he or she may be
made available for the Foster Parent program. There will be a
contract. These dogs will remain in/ under the breeder(s) name. They
must be Canadian Champions to be used in the breeding program. The
breeder(s) are responsible for the show entry expenses. Please
understand that the puppies I place with you, may not all grow up
into the prospects that we see at 8/ 12/ or 16 weeks. Until they
have their eyes (at 8 weeks and again at two years at my
expense) and hip x-rays done (at two years of age at my expense), I
may decide they may not be right for the breeding program. At this
point, you have the option to adopt the dog for an adoption fee and
the dog will be transferred in your name at the cost to the
breeder(s). If you chose not to adopt the dog at this point, he/she
is returned to the breeder(s) and he/she will be put up for adoption
to someone else.
What do I need to know if I
want to participate in the foster parent program??
The Girls:
To be a foster parent for
a girl, first and foremost, you must love them. In essence, they are
your dog. They live with you. You are responsible for their well
being. You look after the dog as your own. You are responsible for
their food, vet bills (shots) etc., training, socializing the puppy,
etc. I will keep in touch with you, and should it be decided to
breed her, I am responsible for all the costs incurred with the
breeding. The hip x-rays, eye exams, picking a suitable "date",
ultra sounds, pregnancy x-rays, any expense associated with the
breeding or whelping of your girl. She must be made available, when
she comes into season to be bred. This usually takes a week. When
determined she is ready to be bred, she will be bred every other
day, about three times. Then she goes back home with you.
Approximately 3 weeks later, she will be taken to the vet for
an ultra-sound test. If she is pregnant, she returns home with
you till about a week before her "determined" due date. Then she
will go back to the vet for an ex-ray to determine how many puppies
she will have. She returns to the farm with us to be loved and
pampered. When she goes into labor, and the puppies are born, she
stays approximately one month to feed, care and nurture her babies.
When the pups are introduced to "gruel", ground up puppy food, we
wean the puppies off mothers milk, and she can come home to you. In
essence your girl will stay with us for about 5 to 6 weeks out of
the year.
The
Boys:
Boys will be
boys!!! They have the easy part. Same as above, you must, first and
foremost, love them. In essence, they are your dog. They live
with you. You are responsible for their well being. You look after
the dog as if it is your own. You are responsible for their food,
vet bills (shots), training, socializing the puppy, etc. I will
keep in touch with you, and should we decide to breed him, I am
responsible
for
all the costs incurred with the breeding. The hip x-rays, eye exams,
picking a suitable "date", any expense associated with the breeding.
He must be made available during breeding season, (Sept.
to Dec.) This usually takes about a week. When determined he
is needed to be bred to his "date", he will be bred every other day
to her, about three times. Then he goes back home with you.
